I used GIMP's flame render filter (Filters > Render > Nature > Flame) and I experiment with that until I get something I like, all while using a black to white gradient. Afterwards I duplicate that layer a couple of times and apply various effects to each one (usually Gaussian blur on 2 layers, plus I change the layer mode from normal to dodge on 2 other layers). Finally, add a color overlay. In a case like this, I would order my layers like this (bottom layer to top layer, i representing the flame render); Black > i Heavy Blur > i Slight Blur > i Original > Color Overlay > i Dodge > i Dodge. I have been practicing doing the design by hand recently, though it take a lot of time...
And since when does a cartoon decide my sexuality?
